in·scape
I invented a new word, or so I thought. The title for my next show, inscape, had been coined by poet Gerard Manley Hopkins back in the mid-19th century. Further exploration led me to realize this to be the perfect title and a concept that articulates how I understand my own art.
in·scape The unique essence or inner nature of a person, place, thing, or event, especially depicted in poetry or a work of art.
A Parrish Art Museum exhibit of abstract paintings by the same title describes inscape as “expressing the unique inner nature of a person, place, thing or event—the emotional feelings generated by everyday life experiences. This exploration of the notion of “inscape” or inner landscape informs the works of the artist.”
I cannot say it better myself.
My process balances control and freedom, rigor and accident, intention and discovery, in the service of expression. Form, color, shape and composition are the root of abstract gesture in my work. Small sketches in ink and colored pencil drawings are combined and manipulated into what I create. Materials and surface qualities, such as texture and sheen matter. Recent experiments explore a departure from rectangles. I have included several shaped works in this show. I hope you enjoy it.
Exhibition runs through November 7, 2025.
